Sorry, I couldn't resist. Today, I told my English conversation partner, "Sorry, I was running late." And she stopped, "Where were you running from?" "Nowhere" "Oh, then where do you need to run to?" "Nowhere. 'Running late' is just an expression for being late." Then she continued, "But you did go running, right?" Me: "Nope. No running involved, really." And then I realized that idioms are so counterintuitive.
I can forgive you for this.

ReplyDeleteIt's really the bug that did it for me. The rest is perfectly acceptable and actually encouraged. Especially if said with a dorky grin.
